New Moon Feb. 2013

This month's New Moon occurs on Feb. 10, 2013, 16:20 JST (all the timing in this article is to be calculated in JST) at the 22nd degree of Aquarius. Since last year, we are thinking about degree meanings with Sabian symbols as hints. The symbol is "A rug placed on the floor for children to play". I have explained that in order to think about degree meaning, we have to geometrically divide a sign into smaller units until the width reduces to 1 degree. I am using the method in which a sign is divided first into 3 sections of 10 degrees(decans). Then this 10 degree is further divided into 2 sections of 5 degrees. Finally, this 5 degree section is divided into 5 of each degree. With each dividing operation, we are adding a bit of meaning, assigning a role signified by the number within the small section as a whole. So the 22nd degree of Aquarius, where the New Moon this month is, belongs to the third decan of the sign, first half of the decan and 2nd of the 5 degree section. Let us code this as "Aquarius 3-1-2" in this article.
Now let's think about what is the meaning of dividing up to a certain number of parts. Zodiac it self is divided into 12 signs as parts. I think the number 12 symbolize "organizational confinement". So division of 12 implies 12 steps toward growing into organizationally confined whole. In the same way, if we divide something into 3, we are analyzing 3 steps to become grown and characterized (which the number 3 symbolizes). The same image of dividing 12 signs into 3 "perspectives(as termed in Glenn Perry's text)", personal-interpersonal-transpersonal applys to this, too. So we are talking about generalization (or trans-personalization) of the function of Aquarius' developing ability of experimenting what's important to people at large. Divide by 2 means analyzing 2 steps to become aware of the theme of the region (which the number 2 symbolizes). So we are developing subjective awareness rather than objective of the second half, which will be developed afterward based on the experience here.

Then we finally divide the 5 degree area into 5 parts of 1 degree. 5 signifies expression of creativity. So we are thinking about 5 steps to creatively express the theme of the whole 5 degrees area. The first step of those 5 steps (with the former half of the third section of Aquarius, this is the symbol "A woman disappointed and disillusioned"), is to simply observe the theme of the area. The Aquarius' function of experimenting what taking responsibility in an organization means to an individual and figuring out ideal ways to act in a society, working collectively here in the 3rd decan, is now actually experienced as the situation in which an individual need is to be given up for collective purpose. Point here is that consciousness is putting priority to organizational stand point. The second step is to sense the reaction to the first movement. "A rug placed on the floor for children to play", which is the theme degree for this month, is what the woman above might look like symbolically from outside. Then the third step is accumulation of the observations and their understandings. The symbol "A big bear sitting down and waving all its paws" implies how the unique individual traits will develop stimulated by collective culture. When on 4th step, with the image of "A man turning his back on his passions and teaching from his experience", one intentionally teaches what one would feel like when he is to be of service in a community culture. The theme of the 5 degree area thus refined with discipline. The fifth step is the creative output of this five degree area. The image of "A butterfly with the right wing more perfectly formed" in this context is that we have developed more of the intellectual side of wings to fly around in the sky. This process of five steps are around every degree we analyze with Sabian symbol, so being aware of the context helps focusing the meaning of the symbol.

Aspects to the Sun

Last aspect to the Sun before the New Moon was on Jan. 31 when the Sun has touched Saturn. After that for a while the Sun is not touching anything with major aspect creating a period of no aspect Sun, symbolizing leadership operating without clear focus or theme. Then after the New Moon, the first thing the Sun touches is Neptune on 2/21. Expression of ideal image from the leader could be expected. Then the Sun makes contact with Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn around 2/26-3/2. Organizational effort would be made in this period. And finally it makes contact with Mercury on 3/4. Leadership will try to cope with realistic issues (Saturn) with some deep vision or perspective and reflect the theme into concrete plan (Pluto, Jupiter, Mercury).

Aspects among the rest of the planets

There is no important exact aspect of note among outer planets for this Moon month, but the effect of sextile between Saturn and Pluto, exact on 12/27 will still be felt especially while Mercury and Mars translates between those two planets (bringing Uranus into the mix as well) around 2/12-17 and 3/7. Interaction between official stance and real intention continues further (which will go on even without the sextile aspect due to the mutual reception) and this theme might be brought up in communication or media. Later in this Moon month, Jupiter and Neptune are translated by Sun from 2/21-26, and idealistic vision might be pursued by leadership.

The first inner planet to track is Mars, the action department, which is very active in the former half of this Moon month. Right before the New Moon on 2/9, Mars touches Mercury and discussion and making of plans are pursued around this period. On the day right after the New Moon, Mars touches Jupiter, acquires social support for important action. After that, it translates Saturn and Pluto from 2/16-17, in relation to Mercury, putting various plans into concrete and practical action. Then Mars will touch Mercury again on 2/26.

Next let's look at what Mercury is up to. Mercury has touched Mars before the New Moon as we talked about above, and then touches Pluto and Saturn on 2/12-13. Plans are to be carried out by large organization in some prolonged period might be talked about and put into action around this and above Mars period (in Japanese political scene, supplementary budget plans are about to be discussed around this period). Then importantly, Mercury starts retrograde on 2/23 and then touches with Mars again on 2/26, reflection of the plan starts. It might be related to amendment of the long term plan which will be again focused on 3/7. Mercury will then touches Jupiter on 3/10,

Next, let us talk about Venus. Venus touched Uranus and Jupiter before the New Moon. Well, in winter, if we are sensitive to the aspect between inner planets and Uranus and Neptune, chances are high that we know when the snow falls especially in Tokyo where snow is relatively rare. 1/14 is a day after Venus-Uranus square, and 2/6 is also a day before Venus-Uranus sextile! By the way, the blizzard in America might be something to do with Sun-Uranus semi-square! After the New Moon, Venus touches Saturn and some serious social organization might be formed around this period. After ingressing into Pisces, Venus will be in contact with Neptune(another snow?), aesthetic image or idealism might be developed. On 3/4, Venus touches Jupiter and relationship might be actively formed. Then on 3/7, Venus touches Saturn-Pluto and Mercury so something might be finalized around this time to come out as a tangible and enjoyable form or organization.

Planets which change direction or sign

Planets other than Sun and Moon sometimes change their direction of apparent movement seen from the earth. When a planet changes its direction, it moves slowly and may leave its mark on various social events in the world. Within this Moon month, only Saturn and Mercury change its direction. Saturn goes retrograde on 2/19 and it continues to go backwards until 7/8. Saturn is related to rule and building of system and organization, so the period around the change of direction, those themes might be emphasized. While the Saturn is retrograding, people tended to be strict to rule or system which is connected more to private or individual themes rather than society at large. We could reflect how those theme will be important to each individual, and the experience could be brought back to society as a whole when Saturn resume its direct motion in the summer. And Mercury also goes retrograde on 2/23 until 3/18. While Mercury is retro grading, people will tend to think about themselves first which might lead to misunderstanding or miscommunication. But it is nice period to reflect and redo things we have done not well in the past.

And planets, especially those that move slowly, change their signs in sync with shifts in corresponding profile of social or collective psychology. Within this Moon month, there is no planet among the planets which travel slower than the earth that changes its sign.

During this Moon month, keeping the points I have raised above, let's try to use our Aquarian Sun's energy of experimenting expression of uniqueness and individuality in response to society, being conscious about how it looks like from outside. It should be interesting to observe those symbols reflected in the real socio-situations in the world.
