New Moon May. 2013

This month's New Moon occurs on May 10, 2013, 9:28 JST (all the timing in this article is to be calculated in JST) at the 20th degree of Taurus. Since last year, we are thinking about degree meanings with Sabian symbols as hints. The symbol of the New Moon degree is "Wind clouds and haste". I have explained that in order to think about degree meaning, we have to geometrically divide a sign into smaller units until the width reduces to 1 degree. I am using the method in which a sign is divided first into 3 sections of 10 degrees(decans). Then this 10 degree is further divided into 2 sections of 5 degrees. Finally, this 5 degree section is divided into 5 of each degree. With each dividing operation, we are adding a bit of meaning, assigning a role signified by the number within the small section as a whole. So the 20th degree of Taurus, where the New Moon this month is, belongs to the second decan of the sign, second half of the decan and 5th of the 5 degree section. Let us code this as "Taurus 2-2-5" in this article.

Now let's think about what is the meaning of dividing up to a certain number of parts. Zodiac itself is divided into 12 signs as parts. I think the number 12 symbolize "organizational confinement". So division of 12 implies 12 steps toward growing into organizationally confined whole. In the same way, if we divide something into 3, we are analyzing 3 steps to become grown and characterized (which the number 3 symbolizes). The same image of dividing 12 signs into 3 "perspectives(as termed in Glenn Perry's text)", personal-interpersonal-transpersonal applys to this, too. This New Moon is located in the second decan, so we are talking about interaction between people (or inter-personal dimension) of the function of Taurus' developing ability of experiencing what's important to people when interacting. Divide by 2 means analyzing 2 steps to become aware of the theme of the region (which the number 2 symbolizes). So we are developing objective awareness rather than subjective of the first half, building onto the basis learned in the first half for the experience here in the later half.

Then we finally divide the 5 degree area into 5 parts of 1 degree. 5 signifies expression of creativity. So we are thinking about 5 steps to creatively express the theme of the whole 5 degrees area. The first step of those 5 steps (with the latter half of the second section of Taurus, this is the symbol "An old man attempting vainly to reveal the Mysterie"), is to simply observe the theme of the area. The Taurus' function of refinement of personal value and sense of beauty is tried earnestly to be expressed and understood. Point here is that the focus is the response of the person (student) who receives the value expressed by the old man, symbolized by the LATTER HALF(response) of the 2nd decan of the sign Taurus. The second step is what happens inside of the teacher when faced with the theme of first movement. Be aware of the object the first step is running after. "A battle between the swords and the torche" is what is happening inside the teacher's mind in order to convey his value to other people. Then the third step is accumulation of the observations and their understandings. The symbol "A woman holding a bag out of a window" implies the importance of being aware of the container in which the value is kept, in terms of conveying value to other people. When on 4th step, with the image of "A newly formed continent", we are witnessing the container talked above is built firmly in large scale. The theme of the 5 degree area thus refined with discipline. The fifth step is the creative output of this five degree area. The image of "Wind clouds and haste" in this context, which is the theme degree for this month, is that we control (as wind) the container in which we communicate our values between people. We became aware of creatively using our will to establish environment necessary to express values and to be understood. This process of five steps are around every degree we analyze with Sabian symbol, so being aware of the context helps focusing the meaning of the symbol.

Aspects to the Sun

Last aspect to the Sun before the New Moon was on 5/2 when the Sun touched Pluto. We have talked about "leaders exert administrative effort to control the situation". Since it is around the day to celebrate the constitution, there are some expression of opinions about amendment of the constitution. Right after the New Moon, on 5/12 the Sun will touch Mercury, and leaders may voice their vision or opinion, or since it is in Taurus, sing! After ingressing into Gemini on 5/21, the Sun will make contact with Neptune on 5/26, with Uranus on 6/2. Ideal of people might be felt somewhat different from what leadership is pursuing. But leader would continue to proceed firmly and to express his/her vision in the reforming direction.

Aspects among the rest of the planets

There is an important exact aspect of note among outer planets for this Moon month, the square between Uranus and Pluto, exact on 5/21, the third among series of 7 exact squares which form during 3 years from 2012 to 2015. Experimental trials in order to reform the system might be digged deeper and deeper, in the hope to find ways to make good use of individual traits while operating in a collective system. And another important aspect is coming in next month between Saturn and Neptune. Let's hope the ideal are being materialized.

The first inner planet to track is Mars, the action department, which is rather drifting in this Moon month. After it has touched with Mercury-Pluto before the New Moon on 5/6-8, it doesn't make major contact with any planet for a while. So the action department seems to be not focused clearly, and looking for cause or object to act on. Mars enters into Gemini on 5/31, and become somewhat restless, and then on 6/8 it touches Neptune, the only major contact it makes in this Moon month. Seeking and seeking and finally Mars would find some phantom target!

Next let's look at what Mercury is up to. Before the New Moon, Mercury is busy coordinating between outer social planets. Mercury touched Neptune, Saturn and Pluto, and finally catched up with Mars from 5/4 to 5/8 (and after that, Mars starts drifting...). After the New Moon, Mercury will touch the Sun of leadership to consider about idealistic plan or talk about it. Mercury enters its own sign of Gemini on 5/16, and then touches Neptune. We had better be careful about misunderstanding caused by outer image, rumor or anxiety. Then from 5/21 to 5/27, Mercury touches Uranus, Venus and Jupiter consecutively. Idealistic idea might be circulated. After ingressing into Cancer on 5/31, Mercury will touch Neptune and Saturn on 6/4 to plan how to turn ideal into real. Then from 6/8 to 6/9, Mercury touches Pluto and Uranus to talk about radical idea of reform or re-structuring.

Next, let us talk about Venus. Venus goes into Gemini right before the New Moon on 5/10 and then touches Neptune on 5/14 to feel something is not right in relationship or cooperation. Then Venus touches Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter from 5/19 to 5/29. Idealistic value will be communicated, and new group or cooperation for the ideal might be formed during this period. After coming into Cancer on 6/3, Venus will touch Neptune and Saturn on 6/7-8. The effort to make the idealistic value real is to be made, and cooperation for that purpose will be formed.

Planets which change direction or sign

Planets other than Sun and Moon sometimes change their direction of apparent movement seen from the earth. When a planet changes its direction, it moves slowly and may leave its mark on various social events in the world. Within this Moon month, only Neptune change its direction. Neptune starts its retrograde motion on 6/7. Neptune has the theme of immersing themselves into collective psychology or ideal image. It fosters ability to learn about unspoken emotion of others and feel for socially weak people. But it could bring about confusion or anxiety, if things go get out of hand. So around the date which Neptune change its direction, those theme will be emphasized in society or course of life events. While Neptune is retrograding, people will tend to think about themselves first concerning Neptune's themes which might lead to misunderstanding or mis-regarding of ideal image with each other. But it is nice period to reflect and reorganize one's own totality of psyche.

And planets, especially those that move slowly, change their signs in sync with shifts in corresponding profile of social or collective psychology. Within this Moon month, the only planet among the planets which travel slower than the earth that changes its sign is Mars. Mars changes its sign from Taurus to Gemini on 5/31. While in Taurus people tend to act practically and do things based on down to earth sensitivities. After coming into Gemini, people start to act more experimentally, being curious to look around and find possibilities.

During this Moon month, keeping the points I have raised above, let's try to utilize our Taurus Sun's energy of act firmly for desired result creatively, facing up with specific situations. It should be interesting to observe those symbols reflected in the real socio-situations in the world.
