New Moon September 2013

This month's New Moon occurs on September 5, 2013, 20:36 JST (all the timing in this article is to be calculated in JST) at the 14th degree of Virgo. Since last year, we are thinking about degree meanings with Sabian symbols as hints. The symbol of the New Moon degree is "a family tree". I have explained that in order to think about degree meaning, we have to geometrically divide a sign into smaller units until the width reduces to 1 degree. I am using the method in which a sign is divided first into 3 sections of 10 degrees(decans). Then this 10 degree is further divided into 2 sections of 5 degrees. Finally, this 5 degree section is divided into 5 of each degree. With each dividing operation, we are adding a bit of meaning, assigning a role signified by the number within the small section as a whole. So the 14th degree of Virgo, where the New Moon this month is, belongs to the second decan of the sign, first half of the decan and 4th of the 5 degree section. Let us code this as "Virgo 2-1-4" in this article.

Now let's think about what is the meaning of dividing up to a certain number of parts. Zodiac itself is divided into 12 signs as parts. I think the number 12 symbolize "organizational confinement". So division of 12 implies 12 steps toward growing into organizationally confined whole. In the same way, if we divide something into 3, we are analyzing 3 steps to become grown and characterized (which the number 3 symbolizes). The same image of dividing 12 signs into 3 "perspectives(as termed in Glenn Perry's text)", personal-interpersonal-transpersonal applys to this, too. This New Moon is located in the second decan, so we are talking about interaction between people (or inter-personal dimension) of the function of Virgo's developing ability of discriminating details. Divide by 2 means analyzing 2 steps to become aware of the theme of the region (which the number 2 symbolizes). So we are developing subjective awareness rather than objective of the second half, establishing the basis of what is learned in the first half onto which we continue to build the experience in the later half.

Then we finally divide the 5 degree area into 5 parts of 1 degree. 5 signifies expression of creativity. So we are thinking about 5 steps to creatively express the theme of the whole 5 degrees area. The first step of those 5 steps (with the former half of the second section of Virgo, this is the symbol "a boy molded in his mother's aspiration for him"), is to simply observe the theme of the area. The Virgo's function of discriminating details in order to make it work in the given situation is symbolized by the mother's influence upon the boy to become somebody special. Point here is that the focus is the proactiveness of the mother to the boy, mother's awareness of boy's special talent which is to be grown, symbolized by the FORMER HALF (action) of the 2nd decan of the sign Virgo. The second step is what happens inside of the boy when received the energy of first movement. Be aware of the object the first step is running after. "A bride with her veil snatched away" is what is happening inside the boy's mind who received the discriminating energy of the mother, becoming a bride ready to interact. Then the third step is accumulation of the observations and their understandings. The symbol "a strong hand supplanting political hysteria" implies the importance of being aware of the vehicle of the energy (in this case, the strong hand) in which the every kind of motive and corresponding experience is held, in terms of controlling the situations. When on 4th step, with the image of "a family tree", which is the theme degree for this month, we are focusing on the core of the vehicle talked above is built clearly and functions as a cultural mediator which catalyzes conveyance of discriminating ability within the collective. The theme of the 5 degree area thus refined with discipline here on this 4th degree. The fifth step is the creative output of this five degree area. The image of "an ornamental handkerchief" in this context is that we dramatize the vehicle (or core of energy carrier) in which we utilize our awareness of detail to make the product attractive. We became aware of meaning of discriminating details to make use of skills we have acquired in order to improve the society. This process of five steps are around every degree we analyze with Sabian symbol, so being aware of the context helps focusing the meaning of the symbol.

Aspects to the Sun

Last aspect to the Sun before the New Moon was on 9/1 when the Sun touched Pluto. After the New Moon, the Sun will touch Jupiter on 9/7 to complete translation of the opposition. We have talked about that the opposition might "bring strong argument and power struggle into the society". After touching Jupiter, the Sun makes no other major contact with planets until it ingresses into Libra (9/23) and get in touch with Pluto and Uranus on 10/2-3. So the image of leadership might be the one with philosophy and will not be effectively influence and instead scatter its ability.

Aspects among the rest of the planets

There are an important exact aspect of note among outer planets for this Moon month, sextile between Saturn and Pluto on 9/21. The two planets have been in mutual reception since last October and the aspect is the third and final of the series. The aspect helps remind necessity to bring structural reform but tends to choose less stressful way.

The first inner planet to track is Mars, the action department, which will touch Saturn on 9/7 after the New Moon. Some effort to proceed the project at hand overcoming some blockage is suggested. Mars then touches Uranus on 9/15, getting active in experimenting something new or protesting reform. Then on 9/17, Mars will touch Mercury to putting plans into action or theory into practice. On 9/28, Mars will touch Venus and try finding partner for cooperation.

Next let's look at what Mercury is up to. After the New Moon Mercury changes its sign into Libra on 9/9, and then it touches Pluto and Uranus on 9/15-16. It is interesting to note that during the period Mr. Noel Tyl delivers lecture on vocational profiling in Japan and change drastically the way to think about career Japanese astrologers might have had. And on 9/17 as we talked above, nice timing to put theory into practice and graduates of Noel Tyl master course will just do that in their post-seminar lecture! It is very interesting that Noel Tyl seminar in Japan coincides with those Uranus-Pluto active days! Then on 9/20, Mercury touches Jupiter and certain idea will spread or communication will become active. On 9/29, Mercury goes into Scorpio, and on 10/2 it touches Neptune and thinks and communicates about dreams and ideals.

Next, let us talk about Venus. After the New Moon, Venus will touch Neptune and dream about perfect cooperation on 9/14. Then it translates Saturn and Pluto on 9/19 to form a deep purposed cooperation. On 9/27-28, Venus touches Jupiter and Mars and ideal value is shared and put into action around this time.

Planets which change direction or sign

Planets other than Sun and Moon sometimes change their direction of apparent movement seen from the earth. When a planet changes its direction, it moves slowly and may leave its mark on various social events in the world. Within this Moon month, only planet which change its direction is Pluto. Pluto is associated with collective activation of power, deep understanding of something hidden, forceful exclusion and related emotional issues, etc. So around the time Pluto changes its direction, those issues might be felt strongly and come up to front.

And planets, especially those that move slowly, change their signs in sync with shifts in corresponding profile of social or collective psychology. Within this Moon month, no planet among the planets which travel slower than the earth changes its sign.

During this Moon month, keeping the points I have raised above, let's try to utilize our Virgo Sun's energy to be aware of detail and being able in order to be of use to other people and improve the society. It should be interesting to observe those symbols reflected in the real socio-situations in the world.
